Here's a little article we've recently contributed to SeeWhatSheCanDo ... ***5 Key Milestones on the Road to Cycling Success*** “You rode your bike HOW FAR?” It’s a common refrain – usually uttered shortly after I answer the question “How was your weekend?” I’ll mention the Saturday morning club ride, or the Sunday gravel ride – both of which usually clock in at between 75 and 100 kilometres. After 15 years as an avid cyclist, riding these distances have somehow become routine. Care to join me? If you fantasize even a little bit about turning an occasional ride around the block into a bigger adventure, here are five key milestones and a bunch of tips ... Looking to build strength in the top of the pullup? If you can pull yourself halfway up or maybe even a few inches from the bar during a pullup then try this! Attach a band to the top of the lat pulldown machine and loop around the wide lat pulldown bar. The band will increase in tension the closer the bar gets to your collar bone. Inevitably the most tension or the hardest part of the pulldown for you will be in this position. Increase the weight and band strength as needed. Start with: 🔥3 sets of 12 reps 🔥hold down for 1 sec. In bottom 🔥perform with 3 second eccentric (up) #crossfit #crossfitnewmarketcentral #truenorthgrit #spartan #pullups #bodybuilding #fitness #gym
A couple of weeks ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to share my and Hijabi Ballers’ story with a great group of women at Nike Canada’s Workout class. I spoke about my three crazy dreams: 1. When I was younger I always dreamt of being part of a sports team. I never grew up playing organized sports in a league, so I never felt like I was good enough to be on a team. In high school, my school introduced rugby for the first time- and nobody knew what it was or how to play. I saw this as a chance to finally be on a level playing field (literally) as everyone else. I felt confident to try out for the team and actually went on to win MVP in my final year 🙌🏼 This was my crazy dream come true. Playing rugby gave me a sense of belonging and purpose. 2. When I broke my leg (tibia and fibula, snapped right in half) during a tackle, after 6 years of playing rugby, I was devastated. I knew my recovery would take long but I couldn’t bear being so distant from the sports community. I had given a bit of thought to the idea of creating an organization/space where Muslim female athletes could be celebrated. There would be times when I would think about this day and night- I really wanted to build something sustainable, and well thought out that would directly serve the needs of the community. I desperately wanted to be involved in sports and creating valuable sports opportunities for others. I always thought it was rare/unconventional to be a Hijabi playing sports- because that’s what people, the media and our culture made me think. When I stared this project, I asked people to connect me with hijab wearing athletes in Toronto that they knew- and I got over 50 names in just two weeks. And not just their names. Their stories, challenges, struggles, passions and visions. I couldn’t turn back. I was in the right place at the right time and my dream of giving back to the sports community was coming true. 3. My next dream is playing rugby again. Full out tackle, contact rugby. I attended my first contact practice last week. It felt amazing. Thank you to Nike Canada and Narrative for the opportunity and to all of you for supporting us every step of the way. 💕💪🏾 @ Elle Fitness and Social
