Tom Longboat was one of Canada’s premier marathon runners. He won the 1907 Boston Marathon and competed at the 1908 Olympic Games in London. Tom was a proud member of the Six Nations. His cultural understanding of running included doing long distance runs to develop strength and endurance over distance, which is what runners do today. The Tom Longboat Award was named for him and is awarded to the top male and female aboriginal athlete of the year. It is a prestigious award, meant to encourage young athletes to continue excelling in sport. Wilton Littlechild, who won the award in his youth, was recently inducted in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame as a builder, for his work in helping to create the Indigenous Games. . . . The kiddos and I laced up our sneaks for a good cause this weekend by participating in the Terry Fox Run this weekend. We walked/ran along with our Ringette family the Mississauga Mustangs. Such a great way to kick off the 2019/20 Ringette season!
