"I started paddling at age nine. I made my first international team at seventeen and raced for Canada for ten years. I can’t pinpoint when, but at some point, my life started to center around competing at the Olympics – on being an Olympian. It was instilled early by coaches, media, and the culture of high-performance sport. It was a dream I carried with me until my final day on the water. At times it was all I cared about and the only accomplishment that mattered. In 2016, weeks before Olympic trials, I suffered a burnout that abruptly ended my career and closed the door on my dream of becoming an Olympian. I didn’t see it coming and it hit me harder than I could have anticipated. I couldn’t imagine a time when I would be strong again. I turned away from sport and felt my entire career was a failure because I hadn’t achieved that one BIG goal. Three years and lots of learnings later, I’m proud to say I have found my strength again. It came through accepting love and support from a team of family and friends. I now see the value of my journey had nothing to do with the end result, and that it never did. The benefits of sport have far outweighed the downsides and now I look back with pride because I see the strengths I’ve gained and the experiences that have made me who I am. I am not an Olympian and that is okay. I am enough. Though there were challenges, my sport experience was largely positive and while this is my narrative, it is not the case for everyone. I acknowledge my privilege and the support I received. I am fortunate and I am grateful. I also acknowledge that the experience for girls and women can be markedly different from that of boys and men. Did you know that girls continue to drop out of sports at six times the rate of boys? When girls drop out, they miss out on lifelong benefits and skills that sport provides. Sport participation develops strength. Whether it’s strong muscles that allow bodies to achieve incredible things, resilient mindsets that allow participants to bounce back after setbacks, or vulnerability that allows them to accept feedback and improve, these strengths empower girls for life. Access to sport and physical activity for girls is critical because the benefits are so valuable. After hanging up my paddle and transitioning into another career in sport (specifically, working to keep girls in sport), I find strength through helping empower others. Though girls and women have faced unfair challenges, change is on the horizon. I’m inspired by the strong women and girls leading the way and am motivated by the thought of the next generation who are full of potential. It’s hard to imagine what my life would be like without sport. Meeting loved ones and making lifelong friends are two of the best things I have thanks to sport. The high highs and low lows that came with the journey also helped uncover and develop strengths that I may not have otherwise known I had. Sport is not just about performance and results. It’s about participation and the process. Sport should be fun, sport should be positive, and sport should be for everyone. Sport has empowered me for life and helped me understand that I am enough. We are all enough."
