Public safety - It plays a critical part in ensuring residents of any community have the opportunity to live well and reach their personal full potential. Public safety is about protecting the general public and prioritizing an individual's physical safety. First Responders - including firefighters, police officers and paramedics - are most often providing the hands-on support that makes any community physically safe.
The individuals who protect and serve their communities are professionals dedicated to being their best with each situation they face. In honour of International Women's Day and together with the Ontario Provincial Police, Richmond Hill Fire & Emergency Services, Central York Fire Services, and York Region Paramedic Services, we are excited to again present four female emergency first responders who represent their professions with honour and distinction. We invite you to read each of their stories and learn more about how their aspirations, motivations, celebrations and strong ethic of caring for themselves and others have shaped their respective careers.
Q: How long have you been a first responder?
A: I’ve been a firefighter with Central York Fire Services for three years.
Q: Did you grow up wanting to be a first responder?
A: I have always wanted to be a firefighter. However, growing up I didn’t realize that it was an achievable goal. This changed when I started seeing female firefighters in the field who encouraged me along the way. This positively impacted my journey and is something I want to pay forward to other aspiring firefighters.
Q: Where did you go to school to learn to be a first responder?
A: I completed an undergraduate degree at York University in International Development and I completed Pre-Service Fire at The Training Division in Crowley, Texas.
Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
A: There have been many highlights in my career so far but the one that stands out to me is how dynamic the job is. I have been apart of some unique calls and really cool training opportunities. I am on a great crew that has turned into family and I am very fortunate for that.
Q: What do you do to keep physically fit and take care of your mental wellbeing?
A: I follow FitbyFire’s training program which helps me prepare physically for fireground tasks and challenges. I believe living a balanced lifestyle is important for my mental health. I also do my best to take time for myself doing activities I love including spending time with people who positively impact my life.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do outside of being a first responder?
A: Outside of work, I really enjoy snowboarding, camping and spending time with my friends and dog Quinn.
