For the sport of volleyball in almost every province of Canada, April represents a huge month filled with mulitiple weekends booked with both girls' and boys' Provincial Championships.  For 2019 in Ontario, Provincial Volleyball Championships covering multiple age categories (11U - 18U) are scheduled on every weekend in the month.

Evolve Volleyball: Creating a league of their own

April 19 - 21, 2019:  16U Girls Provincial Championships

SeeWhatSheCanDo had the opportunity to take in some of the action at the 2019 Ontario Volleyball Association 16U Provincial Volleyball Championships hosted by RIM Park in Waterloo.  Over 20 volleyball courts were in use over the Easter long weekend by 124 16U girls teams from all across the province that competed in four separate divisions.  Each division was broken down further into multiple tiers and, within each tier, eight teams were assigned.  Performance medals were given out to the top teams of each divisional tier and, as such, gave every team participating at Provincials something to strive for regardless of the level of play any particular team played at.

It's also interesting to note that, in comparision, the 16U boys category had a smaller field involving one division of 32 teams broken down into four tiers.  Such a participation ratio that's weighed much more heavily towards the girls' participation underscores how competitive volleyball provides girls of this age group with significant opportunities to compete in sport at a high level.

What's Next:  2019 Volleyball Canada Nationals

Once Provincial Championships are completed, teams have the opportunity to choose to play in Nationals hosted by Volleyball Canada.  For 2019, National Volleyball Championships are scheduled throughout the month of May and will be hosted by six different communities across the country including Regina Saskatchewan, Richmond British Columbia, Edmonton Alberta, Toronto Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario and Halifax Nova Scotia. Much like provincial-level championships, participating teams will be ranked based on prior play and will be matched up against similarly skilled teams as they battle for national recognition.  We wish the best of luck to all 16U girls volleyball teams from across Canada who choose to head to Regina to compete in this year's Nationals.
