Ringette packs the stands on opening day at the 2019 Canada Winter Games

Ringette competition opened today at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta yesterday and the stands were filled with cheering fans, including Minister of Sport, Kirsty Duncan and Governor General Julie Payette.

 

In the opening game, Quebec downed PEI 14-1, with Laval’s Mégane Fortin picking up a hat trick and an assist while Gatineau’s Sara Plouffe, Team Quebec’s flag bearer, and Gatineau’s Julie Vandal each posted two goals and five assists.

 

Defending Canada Winter Games champions, Team Manitoba posted an 8-5 victory over New Brunswick in the second game of the day. Taylor Hildebrand (Oak Bluff) led the scoring for Manitoba with four goals. Moncton’s Britney Snowdon picked up two goals and an assist for New Brunswick.

 

In an exciting nail biter of a game, Ontario and Saskatchewan were tied at 4-4 going into the fourth quarter, then Ontario pulled ahead and finished the game off at 8-4. St. Jacobs Maddie MacLean picked up a hat trick and two assists, including two goals in the fourth period.

 

In the biggest upset of the day, Nova Scotia downed Alberta 8-5. Taylor Gray (Hammonds Plains) and Emma Simpson (Halifax) both picked up hat tricks for Nova Scotia and Grace MacKenzie (Stillwater Lake) stood on her head between the pipes, facing a total of 55 shots.

Quebec 14 Prince Edward Island 1

Manitoba 8 New Brunswick 5

Ontario 8 Saskatchewan 4

Nova Scotia 8 Alberta 5

 

Tomorrow, Sunday February 17, another four games will be played. The schedule is as follows (all times Mountain Standard Time):

10:00 – BC vs. ON

12:30 – QC vs. SK

15:00 – MB vs. NS

17:30 – BC vs. PEI
