Hello SWSCD fans!
Team Artichuk is thrilled to introduce ourselves to the See What She Can Do community! We are a women’s competitive curling team based out of the Northern Credit Union Community Centre in Sudbury, Ontario. The team is composed of:
Lead: Lauren Rajala
Second: Jamie Smith
Third: Megan Smith
Skip: Emma Artichuk
Alternate: Scotia Maltman
Coach: Sean Turriff
This off season we worked hard to put ourselves in a strong position going into the curling season. We are fortunate to have Douglas Thomson of DTKinesiology as a partner of our team. He is a registered Kinesiologist and Personal Trainer who provides our team with a strong fitness program tailored to our goals and needs. Fun fact - Douglas is also Megan’s mixed doubles partner on Team Smith/Thomson!
In July, 4 members of our team had the opportunity to get on the ice early as staff members at the Amethyst Curling Camp in North Bay! In August, Emma, Megan and Sean doubled down and coached at the Trillium Curling Camp in Waterloo. Coaching at curling camps across the province is a highlight of the summer! Having the opportunity to work with young athletes, give back to the curling community and help inspire the next generation of athletes is something we take great pride in.
We also had our first team practice weekend in Waterloo. The arena ice conditions at the Albert McCormick Community Centre were top notch! We found it really beneficial to hit the ice early and work through some of the challenges that come with building a new team.
To wrap up the month of August we flew out to Edmonton, Alberta to compete in our first event of the season - the U25 NextGen Classic. We played 5 round robin games within our pool, and with a strong team performance we finished first in our pool with a 5-0 record. We were resilient as two of those games went down to an extra end! Unfortunately, in the semi-final we came up a little bit short against a strong Team Richards which ended our run. Although losing is never fun, we are proud of our performance and there are so many positives that we can take away from our first event. We are eager to take what we have learned into our next few events and continue building.
Speaking of which, we will be competing in the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard September 6 - 9 and the KW Fall Classic September 20 - 22. Scores will be posted on curlingzone.com and updates will be posted on our social media accounts.
