Lace up your running shoes: It's ball hockey season

As the winter winds down and spring works its way to the surface, recreational ice hockey leagues are wrapping up their regular season games and focusing on playoff battles to determine final season standings.  If you are a person who loves the action-packed, fast-pasted, 3-period game of hockey but prefers to put her skates away for the summer, then ball hockey might just become your new favourite summer sport.  Summertime often marks the season when arena ice pads have been removed and the remaining cement floors are now the surface of choice for local ball hockey leagues. All you need to be able to play are running shoes, a hockey helmet with a mask, shin pads, gloves and a stick.  (Elbow and knee pads are optional but can be worn if you feel you require the additional protection).  Whether you are starting out as a beginner or already consider yourself an expert, there is a league for you.

In June 2017, SeeWhatSheCanDo had the opportunity to photograph some early season action in the Aurora/Newmarket Ladies Ball Hockey League.  We were impressed with the play and performance of the teams we got to watch.  Here is a sampling of some the moments we captured and what you can look forward to if you choose to play summer ball hockey.
