Don't Let The Wrath of Winter Weather Stop Your ability to DO

February is a month where we celebrate love, yet feel very little love for the wintery mix of wind, rain, sleet, and snow that Mother Nature throws at us.  But you don’t have to let the weather get in the way of you, or those close to you, enjoying the chance to be active. That’s because the Town of Aurora offers up numerous indoor sport and recreation facilities for residents to use and enjoy.

To learn more about what these facilities make available to individual residents and to many of Sport Aurora’s member organizations that offer residents recreational and sport-specific programs, leagues, and activities, SeeWhatSheCanDo took a tour of the Town to see for ourselves. Here are some of the highlights of what we found. Feel free to contact them all to learn more.

Aurora Community Centre (ACC)

Aurora’s oldest recreational facility and located just off Aurora Heights Drive, the Aurora Community Centre offers users access to two arena ice pads, two meeting rooms and an auditorium.  It’s also the home of the Aurora Tigers Junior A Hockey Club and the Central York Girls Hockey Association’s office.

Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC)

Located on Industrial Parkway just north of Wellington, the Aurora Family Leisure Complex provides residents access to a gymnasium, an indoor walking/running track, two squash courts, one arena ice pad, a swimming pool, four meeting rooms, a special Bearwalk sensory pathway, and climbing wall.  It’s also home to Club Aurora’s Fitness Centre and Group Fitness Studio.

Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex (SARC)

The Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex is located on Wellington just west of Leslie Street and features two arena ice pads, swimming/teaching/therapy pools, and one meeting room. It is also home to the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame.

Aurora Seniors Centre

Located adjacent to Town Hall on John West Way, the Aurora Seniors Centre provides residents 55 years old and older a multitude of activities including pickleball, badminton, table tennis, carpet bowling and billiards as well as a variety of fitness and learning programs. It's also home to Sport Aurora Member, Aurora Seniors Association.

Aurora Sports Dome

Located right beside the AFLC on Industrial Parkway, the Aurora Sports Dome provides a full size indoor artificial turf field that can accommodate activities including soccer, football, field hockey and rugby.

So, whether you’re looking for ways to walk without the worry of icy sidewalks, shoot some hoops, swim some laps, or find a team to play with throughout the winter months, you can find an indoor recreation facility close by that features something for everyone to actively experience and DO.
